Home› Safaris› Safaris from Nairobi› 2 Day Masai Mara Safari

The Masai Mara is Kenya's most famous reserve. Lions, elephants, buffalo, leopard, and — if you're lucky — rhino, all in one of the highest wildlife densities in Africa. Most people budget 3-4 days to see it properly. This tour is for people who don't have that much time.

The 2-day Masai Mara safari from Nairobi gets you into the reserve, on two game drives, and back to Nairobi — all within 48 hours. You leave Nairobi early morning, drive through the Great Rift Valley, and arrive at camp in time for lunch.

By 4 PM you're on your first game drive. You wake up the next morning for a second drive at sunrise, when predators are most active. Then it's the drive back to Nairobi, arriving by early evening.

This Tour Works Well If

  • You have a short stopover in Nairobi between international flights
  • You're in Kenya on business and only have a weekend free
  • You want a taster safari before committing to a longer one
  • You're on a budget and can't spare 4-5 days

It's not the tour for you if you want a slow, unhurried safari with time to sit and watch a pride of lions for hours, or if you specifically want to witness the Great Migration river crossings — those take patience and more days in the park. If that's you, our 3-Day Masai Mara Safari gives you that extra breathing room.

Distance from Nairobi to the Mara is about 270 km, roughly 5-6 hours by road via the Great Rift Valley and Narok town. A 45-minute flight from Wilson Airport is also available for those short on time or wanting an extra game drive — see our Fly-In Kenya Safaris for details.

Day 2

Masai Mara → Nairobi

  • Arrive back in Nairobi by 5:00–6:00 PM, dropped at your hotel or the airport

Flight Option

If you're flying in, you land at a Mara airstrip mid-morning Day 1, giving you time for an extra short drive before the standard afternoon drive — effectively 3 drives instead of 2. Ask us whether this add-on is available for your dates.

Getting There

Distance & Route

Distance is approximately 270 km from Nairobi to the Masai Mara National Reserve (Sekenani Gate). By road, this takes 5-6 hours each way — tarmac most of the way, with the final stretch into the reserve on murram (dirt) road.

Route: Nairobi → Great Rift Valley viewpoint → Narok town → Sekenani Gate.

Route Map

By Air

Approximately 45 minutes from Wilson Airport to one of several airstrips inside the Mara (Keekorok, Musiara, Ol Kiombo, among others). See our Fly-In Kenya Safaris page for full details.

Driving is included in the standard tour price and is the more budget-friendly option. Flying costs extra but saves close to 10 hours of round-trip travel time — worth it if your 48 hours are genuinely tight and you want more time on game drives instead of on the road.

Pickup & Departure

  • Pickup points: Nairobi hotels, Airbnbs, or JKIA
  • Recommended departure time: 6:30–7:00 AM, to beat Nairobi traffic and arrive at camp in time for lunch

Frequently Asked Questions

It's enough for 2 solid game drives and a real taste of the reserve. It's not enough for an unhurried safari or to reliably catch a Great Migration river crossing, which can take patience over several days. If 2 days is what you have, it's still worth doing — the Mara's wildlife density means you'll see plenty even on a short visit.
Two: one on Day 1 in the afternoon, one on Day 2 at sunrise. The sunrise drive is usually the best for predator activity.
No sighting is guaranteed in the wild. Most guests on a 2-day safari see 3-4 of the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, and often leopard). Rhino sightings are rarer and depend on luck and location.
Expect $250-$350 per person for a budget group safari, $550-$850 for a mid-range private safari, and $900+ for a luxury option — per person, sharing, excluding park fees.
No, in most cases. Park fees are $100 per adult per day in low season (Jan-Jun) and $200 per adult per day in high season (Jul-Dec), paid separately.
Driving is cheaper and included in the standard tour. Flying costs more (roughly $130-$200 one way) but cuts travel time from 5-6 hours to 45 minutes each way — worth it if your 2 days are tight.
Wildlife is resident year-round, so game viewing is good any month. July-October is peak season for the Great Migration and is more crowded and expensive. January-June is quieter and cheaper, with lower park fees.
Neutral-colored clothing (avoid bright colors and all-black/blue, which attract tsetse flies), a light jacket for cold early mornings, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and a camera or binoculars.
Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons people book this tour. Make sure your layover covers the 5-6 hour road transfer each way, or opt for the flight-in version if your window is tighter.
Both options are usually available. Shared/group safaris cost less and put you in a vehicle with other travellers. Private safaris cost more but let you set your own pace and skip waiting on other guests.
