Tanzania's most underrated wildlife gem — walking safaris, flamingo-dotted lakes, ancient volcanic craters, and giraffe encounters, all 45 minutes from Kilimanjaro Airport.
Mountain rainforests. Rich savannahs. Alpine moorlands. And the majestic silhouette of Mount Meru. You can soak up all these landscapes — and walk among the wildlife — in a single day at Arusha National Park, one of Tanzania's most beautiful and varied parks.
Location
Arusha National Park sits in northern Tanzania, 32 kilometres east of Arusha city — approximately 45 minutes by road — and just 35 kilometres from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). It is one of the most easily accessible national parks in all of East Africa, and the only park in Tanzania where you can complete a world-class safari, a walking safari, and a canoe trip all without a single domestic flight.
Distance from Arusha
32 km east. Drive time: approximately 45 minutes.
Distance from KIA Airport
35 km. Approximately 40 minutes by road. No domestic flight required.
Park Size
552 square kilometres (213 square miles). Compact, varied, and extraordinarily diverse for its size.
Highest Point
Mount Meru, 4,566 metres — Africa's fifth-highest mountain and Tanzania's second-highest after Kilimanjaro.
Park Hours
Open daily from 06:00 to 18:00.
Northern Safari Circuit
Pairs naturally with Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti — ideal as the opening or closing chapter of any Tanzania itinerary.
History
The area was first set aside for conservation in 1960 as Ngurdoto Crater National Park, established to protect the region's extraordinary wildlife and wild landscapes. In 1967, the land surrounding Mount Meru was incorporated into the reserve and the park was renamed Arusha National Park — in honour of the Waarusha people who called this land home for generations.
Though often overlooked in favour of Tanzania's more famous parks, Arusha National Park is one of the most ecologically varied protected areas in East Africa — combining dense montane rainforest, open savannah, alkaline lakes, and alpine moorland within a single boundary. It is also home to the world's highest concentration of Masai giraffes, making giraffe sightings virtually guaranteed on every visit.
The Terrain
The park is divided into three distinct natural zones. Mount Meru dominates the west — a dormant volcano whose crater rim reaches 4,566 metres. Ngurdoto Crater occupies the southeast — a collapsed volcanic caldera draped in indigenous forest, often called "Little Ngorongoro" by locals. And the Momella Lakes spread across the northeast — a chain of seven shallow alkaline lakes, each a slightly different shade of green and blue depending on the algae and mineral content beneath the surface.
The grasslands of Serengeti Ndogo ("Little Serengeti") add a fourth character to the park: an open pocket savannah where giraffe, zebra, and buffalo roam in wide, photogenic terrain. Few tour operators include it on their routes. Beyond the Plains Safaris always does.
Why Arusha National Park Is Different
Most Tanzanian national parks restrict visitors to game drive vehicles only. Arusha National Park does things differently. Here, you can walk among giraffes on a guided walking safari, paddle across flamingo-filled lakes by canoe, and peer into the depths of an ancient volcanic crater — all within a single day. It is one of the very few parks in Tanzania, and indeed in all of Africa, where walking safaris are permitted alongside standard game drives.
The park also offers something increasingly rare: genuine solitude. Even at peak season, Arusha National Park rarely feels crowded. You can watch a herd of buffalo cross the savannah without another vehicle in sight — an experience that is becoming harder to find at Tanzania's more famous destinations.

How to Get to Arusha National Park

When to Visit
Best Time to Visit Arusha National Park
Unlike many Tanzanian parks, Arusha National Park is genuinely rewarding year-round. Its high elevation — and the park's dense forest zones — keeps conditions pleasant in every season, with average daytime temperatures between 18°C and 23°C (64°F to 73°F). Early morning game drives can be surprisingly cold, so bring a warm layer.
June to October
Dry Season — Peak Game Viewing
Prime time for wildlife viewing. Vegetation thins, animals concentrate around water sources, and Mount Meru hikes reward trekkers with clear summit views — and on exceptional mornings, an unobstructed view of Kilimanjaro on the horizon. Photography conditions are at their best. Expect the highest accommodation prices and the most visitor activity. Book well in advance for July through September.
January and February
Short Dry Season — Outstanding Value
One of the most underrated windows to visit. Accommodation prices are lower, the park is quieter, and large herbivores move out of the forest in search of water — making them highly visible. January and February also coincide with wildebeest calving in the southern Serengeti, making this an excellent time to combine both parks on a single circuit. Great value for money.
November and December
Short Rains — Shoulder Season
Short, predictable afternoon rains bring a flush of green to the landscape without making the park inaccessible. Wildlife remains active and well-distributed. Rates are noticeably lower than peak, and the park's forest zones take on extraordinary colour. A smart window for budget-conscious travellers who still want quality sightings and comfortable conditions.
March to May
Green Season — Photographers & Birders
Long rains fall through March to May, but the park's dense forests and lakes remain spectacular. Birdwatching reaches its absolute peak as migratory species arrive and resident species breed. The lush scenery and dramatic light conditions are unmatched for landscape and wildlife photography. Rates drop considerably and the park is almost entirely yours. Bird lovers should prioritise November to April specifically.
Year-Round Note
A Tip from Beyond the Plains Safaris
The green season is when we most enthusiastically recommend Arusha National Park for photographers and budget travellers. The light is extraordinary, the landscape electric, and you will have the park almost entirely to yourself. For Mount Meru trekking, the dry season from June to October delivers the clearest summit views and best trail conditions.
Wildlife & Experiences
What to Expect in Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park is one of Africa's few destinations where you can walk among wildlife, paddle through flamingo flocks, peer into an active volcanic caldera, and watch the sunrise over Mount Meru — all in a single day. Here is what awaits you.
Common Wildlife Sightings
The park is home to giraffes, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, hippos, waterbuck, bushbuck, vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, and the spectacular black-and-white colobus monkey — one of East Africa's most visually striking primates, found throughout the forest canopy. Elephant and leopard are present in the forest zones, though sightings are less frequent. Over 400 recorded bird species include the grey crowned crane, silvery-cheeked hornbill, Hartlaub's turaco, African fish eagle, and seasonal flamingo flocks numbering in the thousands on the Momella Lakes.
Guided Walking Safaris
The walking safari in Arusha National Park is the experience that consistently surprises even veteran safari travellers. Led by a TANAPA-certified ranger and guide, you move through montane forest and open grassland on foot — reading animal tracks, learning about plants, watching the bush come alive at ground level. When you encounter a giraffe at 20 metres on foot, or find yourself 30 metres from a buffalo grazing in the grass, you understand why walking safaris here are unlike anything else in Tanzania.
Walking safaris are classified as short (1–4 hours) or long (4+ hours). Both are safe, both are extraordinary, and both are available almost nowhere else in the country.
Game Drives
Open-roof 4×4 game drives allow you to cover the park's varied terrain efficiently — moving from the forest zones around Ngurdoto Crater, across the open plains of Serengeti Ndogo, and along the lakeshores of the Momella Lakes all in a single morning. Morning drives offer the best light for photography and the most active wildlife. Evening drives deliver exceptional birdlife and occasional predator activity around the forest edges.
Canoe Safaris on the Momella Lakes
Paddling silently across the Momella Lakes with hippos surfacing nearby and flamingos taking flight overhead is one of the most peaceful wildlife encounters available anywhere in Tanzania. The seven lakes each sit at slightly different altitudes, feeding into one another via small channels — and each one presents a different colour depending on the algae and minerals beneath the surface. Canoe safaris typically last two to three hours and are accessible to all fitness levels.
Mount Meru — Trekking Tanzania's Second Summit
Rising to 4,566 metres (14,977 feet), Mount Meru is the fifth-highest peak in Africa. The standard ascent takes three to four days via the Momella route, travelling through lush rainforest, across open moorland, and along a dramatic crater rim that offers views both down into the volcano and across to Kilimanjaro's snow-capped summit. Meru is widely regarded as the best acclimatisation trek in East Africa before attempting Kilimanjaro — and a remarkable standalone adventure in its own right.
Top Attractions Inside the Park
Ngurdoto Crater
Known locally as "Little Ngorongoro" — a 3.6 km wide collapsed caldera with extraordinary rim views, buffalo on the forest floor below, and colobus monkeys in the canopy above.
Momella Lakes
Seven shallow alkaline lakes, each a different colour. Flamingos, pelicans, hippos, and waterfowl crowd the shorelines — best experienced by canoe at dawn.
Serengeti Ndogo
A hidden pocket of open savannah mirroring the Serengeti on an intimate scale — the best spot in the park to photograph giraffe and zebra against wide, open skies.
Tululusia Hill
A popular lookout point with panoramic views across the park, Mount Meru, and — on clear days — Kilimanjaro. Camping at Tululusia is one of the park's most memorable overnight options.

Absolutely. Arusha National Park is one of the best single-day safari destinations in East Africa. In a single day you can combine a 2-hour walking safari, a full game drive through Serengeti Ndogo and the Ngurdoto Crater rim, a bush lunch with Mount Meru views, and a 90-minute canoe safari on the Momella Lakes — all returning to Arusha city by 5:00 PM. It is the most complete safari day available within one hour of Kilimanjaro Airport.
Yes. Arusha National Park is one of the very few national parks in Tanzania — and indeed in all of Africa — where walking safaris are permitted alongside standard game drives. All walks are led by a TANAPA-certified ranger equipped with a licensed firearm for safety. Short walking safaris run 1–4 hours; long walks exceed 4 hours. Both options are included as standard in Beyond the Plains Safaris packages.
Giraffes, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, hippos, waterbuck, bushbuck, vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, and black-and-white colobus monkeys are regularly sighted. Elephant and leopard sightings are possible in the forest zones. Over 400 recorded bird species include the grey crowned crane, silvery-cheeked hornbill, Hartlaub's turaco, African fish eagle, and seasonal flamingo flocks on the Momella Lakes that can number in the thousands.
The park is rewarding year-round. June to October is peak season for game viewing and Mount Meru trekking, with the clearest skies and thinnest vegetation. January and February offer lower prices with excellent wildlife visibility and minimal crowds. The green season from November to May delivers outstanding birdwatching, dramatic photographic light, and significantly reduced rates — with the park almost entirely to yourself.
They serve very different purposes. The Serengeti is the home of the Great Migration and the most iconic safari landscape on earth — but it requires a long drive or domestic flight and comes with higher costs. Ngorongoro delivers the best single-day Big Five chances in Tanzania but can feel congested with vehicles at peak season. Arusha National Park is on your doorstep, significantly more affordable, uniquely offers walking safaris and canoe experiences, and provides a level of solitude that both larger parks increasingly struggle to match. It is not a replacement — it is the ideal complement.
Yes. The park's elevated terrain and the option to trek the lower slopes of Mount Meru make it one of the best acclimatisation destinations before attempting Kilimanjaro. The full Mount Meru ascent reaches 4,566 metres — widely regarded as the finest standalone acclimatisation trek in East Africa — and many experienced Kilimanjaro guides recommend it as preparation. Beyond the Plains Safaris can organise Meru trekking as part of a combined Arusha and Kilimanjaro package.
Absolutely. Arusha is the natural gateway to Tanzania's entire Northern Safari Circuit. Most popular combinations include Arusha and the Serengeti (5–7 days), Arusha and Ngorongoro Crater (3–4 days), and the full Northern Circuit including Tarangire and Lake Manyara (7–10 days). We also pair Arusha with the Masai Mara in Kenya for a cross-border East Africa safari experience.
