History
The area was first set aside for conservation in 1960 as Ngurdoto Crater National Park, established to protect the region's extraordinary wildlife and wild landscapes. In 1967, the land surrounding Mount Meru was incorporated into the reserve and the park was renamed Arusha National Park — in honour of the Waarusha people who called this land home for generations.
Though often overlooked in favour of Tanzania's more famous parks, Arusha National Park is one of the most ecologically varied protected areas in East Africa — combining dense montane rainforest, open savannah, alkaline lakes, and alpine moorland within a single boundary. It is also home to the world's highest concentration of Masai giraffes, making giraffe sightings virtually guaranteed on every visit.
The Terrain
The park is divided into three distinct natural zones. Mount Meru dominates the west — a dormant volcano whose crater rim reaches 4,566 metres. Ngurdoto Crater occupies the southeast — a collapsed volcanic caldera draped in indigenous forest, often called "Little Ngorongoro" by locals. And the Momella Lakes spread across the northeast — a chain of seven shallow alkaline lakes, each a slightly different shade of green and blue depending on the algae and mineral content beneath the surface.
The grasslands of Serengeti Ndogo ("Little Serengeti") add a fourth character to the park: an open pocket savannah where giraffe, zebra, and buffalo roam in wide, photogenic terrain. Few tour operators include it on their routes. Beyond the Plains Safaris always does.

Best Time to Visit Arusha National Park
Unlike many Tanzanian parks, Arusha National Park is genuinely rewarding year-round. Its high elevation — and the park's dense forest zones — keeps conditions pleasant in every season, with average daytime temperatures between 18°C and 23°C (64°F to 73°F). Early morning game drives can be surprisingly cold, so bring a warm layer.

Dry Season — Peak Game Viewing
