Africa's Most Significant Rhino Sanctuary
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is not simply another safari destination. It is the most important rhino sanctuary in East Africa — and one of the most consequential conservation sites on the planet. Set between the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya and the dramatic ridges of the Aberdare Range, this 360-square-kilometre private conservancy delivers some of Kenya's finest wildlife experiences alongside a conservation mission of genuine global significance.
Ol Pejeta holds the largest population of black rhino in East Africa — over 110 individuals — plus the world's only surviving northern white rhinos, Najin and Fatu. Visiting them is one of the most quietly devastating and profoundly moving encounters in African wildlife. These are the last of their kind, alive on a continent that once held them in their tens of thousands.
Seeing the northern white rhinos at Ol Pejeta is not simply a wildlife sighting. It is a confrontation with the real cost of inaction — and a reminder of why conservation matters.
Beyond the rhinos, Ol Pejeta supports the full Big Five across diverse habitats — open savannah, riverine forest, acacia woodland, and seasonal wetlands. Lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, and over 500 bird species all call this conservancy home.
It is also the only place in Kenya where you can see chimpanzees, at the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary — a refuge for rescued and orphaned chimpanzees from central and west Africa. It adds a unique and deeply human dimension to any Kenya safari itinerary.

What You Will See at Ol Pejeta
Ol Pejeta's diversity is remarkable. In a single day, you can track black rhino in dense bush, watch a cheetah scan the open plains from a termite mound, encounter elephant herds at the watering hole, and sit with the world's last northern white rhinos at dusk. No other conservancy in Kenya offers this range.
Northern White Rhino
Najin and Fatu are the world's last two northern white rhinos. They live under 24-hour armed protection at Ol Pejeta. Meeting them is one of the most significant and moving wildlife encounters anywhere in Africa — an opportunity that exists nowhere else on Earth.
Black Rhino
Over 110 individuals. The largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. Tracking them on foot with expert rangers is an option.
Cheetah & Wild Dog
Open grassland habitat makes Ol Pejeta exceptional for cheetah sightings. African wild dog packs also roam the conservancy.
Lion & Leopard
Resident lion prides and leopard are sighted regularly across the conservancy's diverse habitats, from open savannah to riverine forest.
Chimpanzee Sanctuary
The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees. A rescue refuge for orphaned individuals from west and central Africa.
Elephant, Buffalo & Hippo
Large elephant herds, resident hippo pods along the Ewaso Nyiro River, and buffalo are reliably seen throughout the year.
How to Experience Ol Pejeta
Ol Pejeta offers more than game drives. Select an experience below to learn more about each one.
Big Five Game Drives
Morning and evening game drives in 4WD vehicles with expert guides are the heart of any Ol Pejeta safari. The conservancy's open grassland and acacia woodland provide excellent visibility for all Big Five species. Unlike more crowded national parks, Ol Pejeta's limited visitor numbers mean you often have significant sightings entirely to yourself.
Night game drives are also available — one of the few conservancies in Kenya that permits them — revealing the entirely different cast of creatures that emerge after dark. Leopard, hyena, porcupine, serval, genet, and bushbaby are all regularly encountered on evening drives.
Black Rhino Tracking
One of Ol Pejeta's most sought-after experiences. Guided tracking on foot with expert rangers who know the individual rhinos and their territories intimately. Getting close to a black rhino in the bush — genuinely close, on foot — is an experience that is difficult to describe and impossible to forget.
Ol Pejeta's black rhino population of over 110 individuals is the largest in East Africa, making sightings highly reliable. The conservancy also conducts regular rhino monitoring and you may have the opportunity to observe the veterinary team at work.
Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary
The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is a rescue facility for orphaned and abused chimpanzees from central and west Africa. It is the only place in Kenya where you can observe these primates — our closest living relatives — in a large, natural bush enclosure.
Visits are guided and carefully managed to minimise stress to the animals. The sanctuary provides an important educational experience about the bushmeat trade and habitat destruction that threatens wild chimpanzee populations. It adds a dimension to an Ol Pejeta safari that no other Kenyan destination can offer.
Night Game Drives
Ol Pejeta is one of Kenya's few conservancies that permits night game drives — a rare privilege that reveals a completely different side of the bush. After dark, the savannah transforms. Leopard move openly, hunting or marking territory. Hyena clans patrol in numbers. Serval, caracal, genet, and porcupine appear in spotlight beams along roadside vegetation.
Night drives run approximately two hours from just after dusk and are conducted in open-sided vehicles with powerful spotlights and experienced guides trained in nocturnal wildlife identification. They can be combined with a sundowner stop to watch the Aberdare Range silhouette against the last light.
Camel Trekking
Camel trekking through the conservancy is a distinctly Laikipia experience — silent, unhurried, and at an angle of view that puts you level with the surrounding bush in a way no vehicle can replicate. Guided treks run along established routes through open grassland and acacia scrubland, passing the riverine habitat along the Ewaso Nyiro River.
Wildlife is often more relaxed around camels than vehicles, and guides use the opportunity to share detailed knowledge of tracks, plant species, and birdlife that game drives tend to pass too quickly to appreciate properly.
Behind-the-Scenes Conservation Tour
For travellers who want to understand the work behind the wildlife, Ol Pejeta offers a guided behind-the-scenes conservation tour. These visits introduce you to the anti-poaching unit operations, rhino monitoring protocols, and the research work that underpins the conservancy's management decisions.
You may meet rangers and veterinary staff, see the equipment used in rhino health monitoring, and hear directly about the challenges and successes of running one of Africa's most significant private conservation operations. It is a genuinely humbling and inspiring way to spend a morning — and one that changes how you think about what it takes to protect wildlife at this level.

Everything You Need to Know
Practical information for planning your Ol Pejeta safari. Click any question to expand the answer.
Ol Pejeta is approximately 3.5 to 4 hours by road from Nairobi via the A2 highway through Thika and Nyeri — a straightforward and scenic drive through the central highlands. A short 45-minute flight from Wilson Airport to Nanyuki Airstrip is also available and a significantly more comfortable option for longer itineraries. We arrange all transfers and connections as part of your safari itinerary.
Ol Pejeta offers excellent game viewing year-round. The dry seasons — January to March and June to October — are generally the most rewarding for open savannah sightings as vegetation thins and animals concentrate around water sources. The green season from November to May brings lush landscapes, exceptional birding, and lower rates. Unlike seasonal parks, Ol Pejeta's resident wildlife population means there is no genuinely bad time to visit.
Yes. Najin and Fatu, the world's last two northern white rhinos, live in a dedicated and carefully managed enclosure within the conservancy under 24-hour armed protection. Guided visits can be arranged as part of any Ol Pejeta safari itinerary. Access is managed to minimise disturbance, and guides provide full context about the conservation programme, the assisted reproduction research underway, and the history of the subspecies' decline. It is a deeply significant encounter.
A minimum of one full day and one overnight stay is needed to experience the main highlights — game drives, rhino tracking, and a chimpanzee sanctuary visit. Two nights is strongly recommended to allow morning and evening game drives on consecutive days, a behind-the-scenes conservation tour, and the option of a night game drive. Ol Pejeta combines naturally with Samburu Game Reserve, Lake Nakuru, or Aberdare National Park in a wider Kenya circuit.
Ol Pejeta has a range of accommodation options from comfortable bush camps to premium lodge stays. We select and book properties that best match your budget, group size, and comfort level. All options sit within or immediately adjacent to the conservancy, putting you inside the wildlife zone rather than commuting from outside. We arrange all accommodation, meals, and activity bookings as part of your itinerary.
Yes. Ol Pejeta is an excellent choice for family safaris. The conservancy's relatively compact size, diverse wildlife encounters, and the educational dimension of the chimpanzee sanctuary and conservation tours make it engaging for children of all ages. The northern white rhino visit is particularly memorable for young travellers — a wildlife encounter that carries genuine conservation weight and tends to leave a lasting impression. We can customise pacing, activities, and accommodation to suit families.
Ol Pejeta combines extremely well with other Kenya destinations. The most popular combinations include:
- Samburu Game Reserve — 3 hours north, different habitat and the Special Five
- Lake Nakuru — 2 hours west, flamingos and white rhino
- Masai Mara — combine for the full Big Five Kenya circuit
- Aberdare National Park — 1 hour east, mountain forest and rare species
Laikipia sits at around 1,700 metres above sea level, making it significantly cooler than parks at lower altitude. Mornings and evenings can be genuinely cold, particularly between June and August. Neutral-coloured clothing, a warm fleece or jacket for early game drives, comfortable walking shoes for rhino tracking, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and binoculars are all recommended. We send all guests a comprehensive packing guide as part of their pre-departure information.
Why Ol Pejeta Matters Beyond Safari
Ol Pejeta is not managed purely as a wildlife tourism destination. It is one of Africa's most active conservation operations, and every visitor contributes directly to its mission.
The conservancy operates one of Kenya's most effective anti-poaching operations, running 24-hour armed ranger patrols, aerial surveillance, and community ranger programmes. A significant portion of visitor revenue is directed to community development projects in the surrounding Laikipia district — schools, health facilities, and local employment initiatives that make conservation economically valuable to the people who live alongside it.
Beyond the Plains Safaris selects Ol Pejeta as a partner specifically because of this conservation integrity. When you travel with us to Ol Pejeta, your visit directly funds ranger salaries, rhino monitoring, chimpanzee care, and community programmes that keep the land and its wildlife secure.
Ol Pejeta Is Unlike Any Other Place in Africa
The chance to stand in the presence of Najin and Fatu — the world's last two northern white rhinos — is one that will not exist indefinitely. Beyond the plains Safaris designs Ol Pejeta safari itineraries that combine this profound encounter with the finest wildlife experiences Kenya has to offer. We handle every detail. You focus on what you came for.
