Serengeti National Park — How to Get There

Most Tanzania safari itineraries originate in Arusha. From there, you have two options: fly-in or road transfer. For most first-time visitors, fly-in is strongly recommended.

Step 1 — Fly into Arusha or Kilimanjaro

International visitors arrive through Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK). KIA is served by direct flights from Amsterdam (KLM), Doha (Qatar Airways), Dubai (Emirates), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), and Nairobi (multiple carriers). A Tanzania e-Visa is available online — most nationalities qualify and processing typically takes two to three business days.

Step 2 — Arusha to Serengeti

By Light Aircraft (Recommended)
Scheduled flights from Arusha Airport reach Serengeti airstrips in approximately 45 to 90 minutes depending on your destination. Seronera Airstrip in the Central Serengeti handles multiple daily departures. Seasonal airstrips serve the Northern Serengeti (Kogatende) and Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) depending on the time of year. Flying places you in the bush immediately — no wasted game drive time in transit.

By Road
An overland transfer from Arusha takes approximately 7–9 hours via the A104 highway, passing through Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The route is scenic, but it consumes an entire day in each direction. For safari stays of four nights or fewer, fly-in safaris almost always deliver better value. Road transfers are best suited to travellers combining Ngorongoro with Serengeti on a longer circuit and who wish to experience the crater rim en route.

From Nairobi — Kenya and Tanzania Combined

For visitors approaching from Kenya, it is possible to combine a Masai Mara safari with a Serengeti safari via light aircraft or overland crossing at the Isebania border. This Kenya and Tanzania combined route is one of the most popular among experienced safari travellers and allows coverage of both sides of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in a single itinerary.

The Honest Truth About River Crossings

The Mara River crossings are spectacular — but they are governed by instinct, not schedule. The wildebeest will cross when they are ready. An experienced guide who understands the herds' behaviour, knows the river's active crossing points, and positions correctly will deliver a fundamentally different experience than one who does not.

The Mara River has multiple active crossing sites. Experienced guides work the river, not one fixed spot. A camp with mobile vehicles and guiding freedom will outperform a static position every time. This is why guide quality and camp positioning matters as much as travel timing.

Calving Season at Ndutu — January to March

The calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area is one of the most extraordinary wildlife events in Africa — and one of the most underrated. At peak, up to 8,000 calves are born daily. Cheetahs, lions, wild dogs, and hyenas converge on the plains in extraordinary concentrations. The flat, open terrain of Ndutu provides ideal photographic conditions. Prices and vehicle numbers are significantly lower than peak dry season.

What to Expect in the Serengeti

The Serengeti supports one of the highest densities of large mammals anywhere on earth. All Big Five are present year-round, alongside a supporting cast of predators, plains game, and over 500 bird species.

Wildlife

Commonly sighted species include lion (resident prides throughout Seronera), leopard (riverine woodland in Central Serengeti), cheetah (open southern plains), African wild dog (seasonal in Western Corridor), and spotted hyena widespread and active at dawn and dusk. Elephant and giraffe are found throughout the park. Hippo and Nile crocodile inhabit the Mara and Grumeti rivers. Plains game includes zebra, Thomson's gazelle, Grant's gazelle, topi, eland, and impala.

What distinguishes Serengeti from most other parks is that large game sightings are not luck-dependent. The Central Serengeti around Seronera offers what experienced safari guides describe as the most consistently excellent big cat viewing in East Africa.

Game Drives

The core Serengeti experience. Most camps offer scheduled morning and afternoon drives in 4×4 safari vehicles — open-sided where conditions allow. Full-day drives with a packed bush lunch are ideal for photographers and serious wildlife enthusiasts, keeping you in the field during midday hours when cheetahs are often most active and the light is most dramatic.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris

Rising before dawn and drifting over the plains and woodland as the light breaks is one of the genuinely remarkable experiences available anywhere in Africa. Most balloon flights launch near the Seronera area, last approximately one hour, and conclude with a traditional bush breakfast. Weight limits apply.

Cost: approximately USD $500–$600 per person for a shared flight. Private flights available at a premium. Advance booking is essential during peak season — balloon operators have limited daily capacity and fill months ahead.

Guided Walking Safaris

The Serengeti permits guided walking safaris — a fundamentally different way to experience the ecosystem. On foot with an armed guide, distances collapse. You notice tracks, dung, insects, birdsong, and the wind direction in a way a vehicle cannot deliver. Walking safaris range from a few hours to multi-day expeditions covering terrain you would never reach by road. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

Night Drives

Available from selected private camps and concession areas. Night drives reveal aardvark, genet, serval, porcupine, and the full activity of the nocturnal predator world — a completely different cast of characters from the daytime ecosystem. Best incorporated into conservancy or private concession stays.

Photography Safaris

The Serengeti is one of the world's premier wildlife photography destinations. Dedicated photography vehicles with modified seating, bean bags, and a guide who understands light and animal behaviour make a significant difference. Green season offers the best light. The northern crossings offer unmatched drama.

How Many Days Do You Need?

1 day: Insufficient. You will see animals, but the experience is rushed and ultimately unsatisfying. Day trips from Ngorongoro exist, but they are not recommended for first-time visitors.

2 nights / 3 days: The functional minimum. Enough for meaningful game drives, but you will leave wanting more.

3–4 nights: The most commonly recommended stay for a first visit. Enough to explore multiple areas, settle into the rhythm of the bush, and have the kind of unhurried encounter with wildlife that defines a great safari.

5–7 nights: Appropriate for migration-focused itineraries covering multiple regions, photography trips, or travellers combining walking safaris with game drives. The single most effective upgrade to any itinerary is adding one more night.

• Booking too late. Top camps in the Northern Serengeti during dry season book out 9–12 months in advance. If the migration is a priority, plan early.
• Relying on one crossing point. The Mara River has multiple active crossing sites. A camp with mobile vehicles and guiding freedom outperforms a static position every time.
• Under-scheduling nights. Back-to-back one-night stops across five parks is the most common first-safari mistake. You spend more time in transit than in the field.
• Choosing road transfer when flying is viable. The Arusha–Serengeti drive is 7–9 hours. For stays of four nights or fewer, fly-in safaris are almost always the stronger investment.
• Ignoring the green season. Calving season at Ndutu, extraordinary photography light, and the quiet, unhurried Serengeti that experienced safari-goers often prefer — all available at lower cost.
