Geography and Regions
Serengeti National Park sits in the Mara and Simiyu regions of northern Tanzania, sharing its northern boundary with Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve. Together, these two protected areas form the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem — one of the most significant and biologically diverse wildlife corridors on earth. This seamless cross-border connection is what makes the Great Migration possible.
The park's terrain shifts considerably from south to north — from the short-grass plains of Ndutu to the rocky kopjes and Mara River corridors of the north. Each zone rewards visitors differently depending on the season.
Central Serengeti — Seronera
The park's wildlife heartland. Year-round big cat activity, resident lion prides, reliable leopard sightings in riverine trees, and strong cheetah presence. The only area where outstanding game viewing is guaranteed regardless of season.
Northern Serengeti — Kogatende
Remote, dramatic, and the location of the famous Mara River crossings during the dry season (July–October). The most sought-after destination during peak Migration season.
Southern Serengeti & Ndutu
Calving season ground zero. Flat, expansive short-grass plains teeming with wildebeest, zebra, and the predators that follow them. Best from January through March.
Western Corridor — Grumeti
Less visited and prime for river crossings in a quieter setting. Outstanding birdlife and excellent game viewing with significantly fewer vehicles than the north or south.
A Brief History
The Serengeti became a Game Reserve in the 1930s, though sport hunting continued until it was banned in 1937. Protected area status followed in 1940. The southern section was formally gazetted as a National Park in 1951, with the park separating entirely from Ngorongoro Conservation Area in 1959 to establish its own distinct identity. UNESCO World Heritage designation followed in 1981, cementing its status as one of the world's most irreplaceable natural environments.

Serengeti National Park — How to Get There
Most Tanzania safari itineraries originate in Arusha. From there, you have two options: fly-in or road transfer. For most first-time visitors, fly-in is strongly recommended.
Step 1 — Fly into Arusha or Kilimanjaro
International visitors arrive through Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK). KIA is served by direct flights from Amsterdam (KLM), Doha (Qatar Airways), Dubai (Emirates), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), and Nairobi (multiple carriers). A Tanzania e-Visa is available online — most nationalities qualify and processing typically takes two to three business days.
Step 2 — Arusha to Serengeti
By Light Aircraft (Recommended)
Scheduled flights from Arusha Airport reach Serengeti airstrips in approximately 45 to 90 minutes depending on your destination. Seronera Airstrip in the Central Serengeti handles multiple daily departures. Seasonal airstrips serve the Northern Serengeti (Kogatende) and Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) depending on the time of year. Flying places you in the bush immediately — no wasted game drive time in transit.
Airlines
Air Tanzania, Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, Regional Air, Grumeti Air
Flight Time
45–90 minutes from Arusha depending on airstrip and routing
USD $150–$350 per person one-way on scheduled services
By Road
An overland transfer from Arusha takes approximately 7–9 hours via the A104 highway, passing through Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The route is scenic, but it consumes an entire day in each direction. For safari stays of four nights or fewer, fly-in safaris almost always deliver better value. Road transfers are best suited to travellers combining Ngorongoro with Serengeti on a longer circuit and who wish to experience the crater rim en route.
Fly-in vs. Road — the practical verdict: The Arusha–Serengeti road drive is 7–9 hours through Ngorongoro. It is scenic, but it removes a full day of game drives from each end of your stay. For first-time visitors and anyone on a stay of five nights or fewer, a fly-in safari is the stronger investment.
From Nairobi — Kenya and Tanzania Combined
For visitors approaching from Kenya, it is possible to combine a Masai Mara safari with a Serengeti safari via light aircraft or overland crossing at the Isebania border. This Kenya and Tanzania combined route is one of the most popular among experienced safari travellers and allows coverage of both sides of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in a single itinerary.
Nairobi to Serengeti
Charter flight from Wilson Airport via Mara to Kogatende or Seronera. Approximately 1.5–2 hours total including any Mara stop.
Overland crossing
Isebania border. Available but requires coordination of border logistics and Tanzania visa in advance. Best handled by an operator.
Approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebra, and hundreds of thousands of gazelle complete a continuous clockwise loop through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem every year — driven entirely by rainfall patterns and the availability of fresh grazing.

The Honest Truth About River Crossings
The Mara River crossings are spectacular — but they are governed by instinct, not schedule. The wildebeest will cross when they are ready. An experienced guide who understands the herds' behaviour, knows the river's active crossing points, and positions correctly will deliver a fundamentally different experience than one who does not.
The Mara River has multiple active crossing sites. Experienced guides work the river, not one fixed spot. A camp with mobile vehicles and guiding freedom will outperform a static position every time. This is why guide quality and camp positioning matters as much as travel timing.
Planning around the Migration? Beyond the Plains Safaris tracks crossing activity daily during peak season and positions our guests at the most productive river sites for their specific dates. Top Migration camps in the northern Serengeti book out 9–12 months in advance. Speak to our team early.
Calving Season at Ndutu — January to March
The calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area is one of the most extraordinary wildlife events in Africa — and one of the most underrated. At peak, up to 8,000 calves are born daily. Cheetahs, lions, wild dogs, and hyenas converge on the plains in extraordinary concentrations. The flat, open terrain of Ndutu provides ideal photographic conditions. Prices and vehicle numbers are significantly lower than peak dry season.

What to Expect in the Serengeti
The Serengeti supports one of the highest densities of large mammals anywhere on earth. All Big Five are present year-round, alongside a supporting cast of predators, plains game, and over 500 bird species.
Wildlife
Commonly sighted species include lion (resident prides throughout Seronera), leopard (riverine woodland in Central Serengeti), cheetah (open southern plains), African wild dog (seasonal in Western Corridor), and spotted hyena widespread and active at dawn and dusk. Elephant and giraffe are found throughout the park. Hippo and Nile crocodile inhabit the Mara and Grumeti rivers. Plains game includes zebra, Thomson's gazelle, Grant's gazelle, topi, eland, and impala.
What distinguishes Serengeti from most other parks is that large game sightings are not luck-dependent. The Central Serengeti around Seronera offers what experienced safari guides describe as the most consistently excellent big cat viewing in East Africa.
Big Five Year-Round
Lion, leopard, elephant, Cape buffalo, and black rhino — all present across the park's varied terrain.
Cheetah Capital
The open southern plains offer some of the finest cheetah viewing in Africa, particularly during calving season.
500+ Bird Species
Raptors, bee-eaters, ground birds, and seasonal migrants. Outstanding birding throughout the ecosystem.
Predator Density
Seronera Valley's abundant prey base creates the most reliable predator-prey interaction viewing in East Africa.
Game Drives
The core Serengeti experience. Most camps offer scheduled morning and afternoon drives in 4×4 safari vehicles — open-sided where conditions allow. Full-day drives with a packed bush lunch are ideal for photographers and serious wildlife enthusiasts, keeping you in the field during midday hours when cheetahs are often most active and the light is most dramatic.
Hot Air Balloon Safaris
Rising before dawn and drifting over the plains and woodland as the light breaks is one of the genuinely remarkable experiences available anywhere in Africa. Most balloon flights launch near the Seronera area, last approximately one hour, and conclude with a traditional bush breakfast. Weight limits apply.
Cost: approximately USD $500–$600 per person for a shared flight. Private flights available at a premium. Advance booking is essential during peak season — balloon operators have limited daily capacity and fill months ahead.
Guided Walking Safaris
The Serengeti permits guided walking safaris — a fundamentally different way to experience the ecosystem. On foot with an armed guide, distances collapse. You notice tracks, dung, insects, birdsong, and the wind direction in a way a vehicle cannot deliver. Walking safaris range from a few hours to multi-day expeditions covering terrain you would never reach by road. A reasonable level of fitness is required.
Night Drives
Available from selected private camps and concession areas. Night drives reveal aardvark, genet, serval, porcupine, and the full activity of the nocturnal predator world — a completely different cast of characters from the daytime ecosystem. Best incorporated into conservancy or private concession stays.
Photography Safaris
The Serengeti is one of the world's premier wildlife photography destinations. Dedicated photography vehicles with modified seating, bean bags, and a guide who understands light and animal behaviour make a significant difference. Green season offers the best light. The northern crossings offer unmatched drama.

Best Time to Visit Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti rewards visitors in every season — but timing shapes the character of the experience considerably. The honest seasonal breakdown, including the underrated windows most travellers miss.
June to October
Dry Season — Peak Game Viewing & Migration Crossings ⭐
The classic safari season. Vegetation is sparse, animals concentrate around water sources, and the Northern Serengeti hosts the Mara River crossings. July through October sees the heaviest concentration of wildebeest in the north. Accommodation books out quickly — particularly in the Northern Serengeti — and prices reflect peak demand. Book 9–12 months in advance for this window.
January to March
Calving Season — Southern Serengeti & Ndutu
One of the most extraordinary and underrated windows in East African safari. Up to 8,000 wildebeest calves born daily at peak. Predator concentrations in the southern plains are exceptional — cheetah, lion, wild dog, and hyena all converge on the calving grounds. Fewer vehicles than peak dry season, lower rates, and outstanding photographic light on the open Ndutu plains.
June and November
Shoulder Season — Value and Quality Combined
Late May and early June — just ahead of peak season — and October through November immediately after it offer excellent wildlife without peak-season vehicle pressure. Rates are noticeably lower. Wildlife doesn't disappear; the vehicles do. A smart window for travellers who prioritise quality encounters over crowd-following.
April to May (Long Rains)
Green Season — Photographers & Experienced Travellers
Underrated and increasingly popular among experienced safari travellers. Lush landscapes, extraordinary photographic light, exceptional birdwatching, and the quiet, unhurried version of the Serengeti that those who have been many times often prefer. Rates drop significantly across all accommodation tiers. The trade-off is occasional afternoon rains and some roads becoming more challenging to navigate.
Year-Round
Central Serengeti — Always Reliable
The Central Serengeti around Seronera is the one area of the park where outstanding game viewing can be expected regardless of the month. If your travel dates are fixed and don't align with the migration, Seronera remains an excellent choice with consistently strong lion, leopard, and cheetah activity throughout the year.

What to Budget for a Serengeti Safari
Budget$250–$400
Per person per day. Shared safari vehicle, basic tented camp, full-board. Best for solo travellers and budget-conscious visitors wanting a genuine wildlife experience.
Mid-Range$400–$700
Per person per day. Private vehicle, mid-range tented camp with ensuite facilities. More flexibility on timing and drive duration. The sweet spot for most first-time visitors.
Luxury$700–$1,800
Per person per day. Premium tented camps, private guide, enhanced activities. Camps positioned for optimal migration access during peak season.
Ultra-Luxury$1,800–$5,000+
Per person per night. Exclusive use, private chef, helicopter transfers, and bespoke programming. The finest properties in the Serengeti ecosystem.
Practical benchmark: A 5-night Serengeti safari for two people, staying at a quality mid-range camp and flying in from Arusha, generally starts at USD $4,500–$6,500 per person inclusive of park fees and internal flights — before international travel costs.
Hot Air Balloon Safari Cost
A shared sunrise balloon flight followed by a bush breakfast typically costs USD $500–$600 per person. Private flights are available at a premium. Advance booking is strongly recommended during peak season as balloon operators have limited daily capacity. This is one of the Serengeti's most sought-after experiences and books out weeks ahead during July through October.

Where to Stay
Serengeti Accommodation — Camps & Lodges
The Serengeti's accommodation landscape runs from basic public campsites to some of the finest tented camps in Africa. Camp selection by season and region is the single most important planning decision beyond dates. Distance from the gate is not the same as proximity to the wildlife.
How to choose the right camp: A camp 90 miles from Naabi Hill Gate in the Northern Serengeti may be ideally positioned for Mara River crossings in July. A camp 20 miles from the same gate may be perfectly placed for calving season herds. Let the season and your priorities — not gate distance — drive your choice. Our team matches you with the right camp for your specific travel window.

Itineraries & Planning
Serengeti Safari Packages & Itinerary Planning
The quality of planning determines the quality of the experience. The right camp for the season, a guide who reads the landscape rather than follows the crowd, an itinerary that breathes — these are what separate a truly memorable safari from one that was simply expensive.
How Many Days Do You Need?
1 day: Insufficient. You will see animals, but the experience is rushed and ultimately unsatisfying. Day trips from Ngorongoro exist, but they are not recommended for first-time visitors.
2 nights / 3 days: The functional minimum. Enough for meaningful game drives, but you will leave wanting more.
3–4 nights: The most commonly recommended stay for a first visit. Enough to explore multiple areas, settle into the rhythm of the bush, and have the kind of unhurried encounter with wildlife that defines a great safari.
5–7 nights: Appropriate for migration-focused itineraries covering multiple regions, photography trips, or travellers combining walking safaris with game drives. The single most effective upgrade to any itinerary is adding one more night.
Suggested Itinerary Combinations
Classic 8-Day Tanzania
Arusha → Serengeti Central (3 nights) → Ngorongoro Crater (1–2 nights) → Zanzibar (2–3 nights). The most popular first Tanzania itinerary.
Nairobi → Masai Mara (2 nights) → Serengeti via charter (3 nights) → Ngorongoro (1 night) → Zanzibar (3 nights). The full Serengeti-Mara circuit.
Common Serengeti Safari Planning Mistakes
Booking too late. Top camps in the Northern Serengeti during dry season book out 9–12 months in advance. If the migration is a priority, plan early.
Relying on one crossing point. The Mara River has multiple active crossing sites. A camp with mobile vehicles and guiding freedom outperforms a static position every time.
Under-scheduling nights. Back-to-back one-night stops across five parks is the most common first-safari mistake. You spend more time in transit than in the field.
Choosing road transfer when flying is viable. The Arusha–Serengeti drive is 7–9 hours. For stays of four nights or fewer, fly-in safaris are almost always the stronger investment.
Ignoring the green season. Calving season at Ndutu, extraordinary photography light, and the quiet, unhurried Serengeti that experienced safari-goers often prefer — all available at lower cost.
Answers to the questions our clients ask most often. If your question is not covered here, our team responds to all enquiries within 24 hours.
Serengeti National Park is in northern Tanzania, within the Mara and Simiyu regions. It shares its northern boundary with Kenya's Masai Mara and is approximately 335 kilometres from Arusha. The park sits within the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem — one of the most significant wildlife corridors on earth.
The Serengeti is world-famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration — the largest overland animal movement on earth — and for exceptional year-round populations of lion, leopard, and cheetah across its vast savanna ecosystem. It is also Africa's oldest intact savanna ecosystem and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.
Serengeti safari costs range from approximately USD $250 per person per day for budget camping to USD $5,000+ per night at ultra-luxury camps. A realistic mid-range safari for two people over five nights typically starts at USD $4,500–$6,500 per person, inclusive of park fees and internal flights. Contact us for a fully itemised quote.
Non-resident adults pay USD $60 per person per day. Children pay USD $30 per day. Fees are set by TANAPA and subject to periodic revision — confirm current rates with your operator at the time of booking. In any legitimately packaged safari, park fees are included and itemised in your quote.
Serengeti National Park gates are open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. All game drives must be timed around these hours for visitors staying outside the park boundary.
The dry season (June–October) offers peak game viewing and Mara River crossings in the north. The green season (November–May) includes the calving season at Ndutu (January–March), fewer vehicles, lower prices, and outstanding photography conditions. Central Serengeti is excellent year-round.
A minimum of 2 nights is needed for a meaningful experience. 3–4 nights is the most commonly recommended for a first visit. Migration and photography-focused itineraries typically require 5–7 nights. The single most effective upgrade to any Serengeti itinerary is simply adding one more night.
Yes. Seronera Airstrip in the Central Serengeti handles multiple daily scheduled flights from Arusha. Additional seasonal airstrips serve the Northern Serengeti (Kogatende) and Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) depending on the time of year. Flying directly into the bush removes 7–9 hours of road transfer and places you in the game drive immediately upon arrival.
Both are exceptional and form part of the same ecosystem. Serengeti is significantly larger, covers the full annual migration circuit, and enforces strict off-road driving standards that reduce wildlife pressure. For a Tanzania-based itinerary or the complete migration experience, Serengeti offers the stronger overall safari. Masai Mara is excellent for travellers based in Kenya or combining an East Africa trip from Nairobi.
Serengeti supports all Big Five species — lion, leopard, elephant, Cape buffalo, and black rhino — plus cheetah, wild dog, hyena, giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile, and over 500 bird species. Lion sightings in the Central Serengeti are among the most consistently reliable in East Africa.
Shared balloon flights cost approximately USD $500–$600 per person and include a traditional bush breakfast. Private flights are available at a premium. Advance booking is essential during peak season — operators fill weeks ahead during the July to October window.
