Kenya’s Most Iconic Safari Destination — The Masai Mara
Few places on earth command attention the way the Masai Mara does. Vast, golden, and almost impossibly alive — this is where the Big Five roam without fences, where cheetahs sprint across open plains in full daylight, and where the Great Migration turns the Mara River into one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles. A Masai Mara safari is not simply a holiday. It is the kind of experience that rearranges your understanding of the wild world.
“The Masai Mara is not a place you visit once. It is a place that visits you — again and again in your memory, long after you have come home.”
Beyond the Plains Safaris curates authentic Masai Mara safaris from Nairobi and across Kenya and Tanzania — each one designed around how you want to explore, not around a fixed group itinerary. Whether you are arriving from London, Mumbai, New York, or Nairobi, we bring the Mara to you on your terms.
Why Choose Beyond the Plains Safaris for Your Masai Mara Safari?

-
Ethically rooted in the community. Our partnerships with Maasai-owned conservancies mean your safari directly supports local livelihoods, conservation, and cultural preservation.
-

Five Experiences That Define a Masai Mara Safari
Hover each card to discover what makes every moment on the Mara unforgettable.
The Great Migration
Over 1.5 million wildebeest surge northward across the Mara River. Thousands of animals plunge into crocodile-filled waters as lions wait on the banks — the world’s greatest wildlife spectacle.
Big Five Safari
Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. Cheetahs hunt in open daylight. The Masai Mara is renowned for extraordinary predator density year-round.
Hot Air Balloon Safari
Drifting silently above the golden plains at sunrise. Approximately USD 450–550 per person, ending with a champagne bush breakfast. The experience most guests call their highlight.
Maasai Cultural Experiences
Village visits, traditional warrior dances, and evenings listening to elders share stories around a fire — through community-owned partnerships that benefit local families directly.
Birdlife & Photography
Over 450 species. The Mara’s open landscapes and extraordinary light make every game drive a photography masterclass for wildlife and landscape photographers alike.
What a Masai Mara Safari Actually Feels Like
The rhythm of a Masai Mara safari has a particular magic to it. You rise before the sun, step into cool air, and climb into the vehicle as the savannah begins to stir. During migration season, the sheer volume of animals — hundreds of thousands moving as one organism — is something photographs cannot fully prepare you for.
The wildlife itself defies expectation every single day. This is not a zoo with fixed hours. It is a living, breathing ecosystem where every drive is genuinely different from the last.
Pre-Dawn Departure
Cool air, flask of coffee, and the savannah just beginning to stir. Guides choose routes based on yesterday’s sightings — predators are most active in the first light.
Golden Hour Game Drive
The light turns everything cinematic. Lions patrol their territories. Cheetahs scan the plains from termite mounds. The sky shifts from violet to amber to brilliant blue.
Lodge, Cold Drinks, Hornbills
Slow lunches, the sound of hornbills in the fever trees, and the specific pleasure of doing nothing in Africa while the heat settles over the plains outside your tent.
Afternoon Drive
Elephants move in family herds toward water. Long shadows cross the grasslands. Leopards become active as the temperature drops across the Mara.
Sundowners on the Plains
A sundowner at a scenic viewpoint as the sky goes from amber to deep violet — and a quiet understanding of what people mean when they say Africa stays with you.
Best Time for a Masai Mara Safari — Every Season Delivers
Timing your safari well is one of the best investments you can make. The Masai Mara rewards visitors year-round, but each season offers something genuinely different. The right choice depends on your priorities, budget, and what you most want to witness.

Masai Mara Safari Cost — What to Expect
Transparent safari pricing is something we care deeply about. Below is an honest breakdown of what a Masai Mara safari price per person looks like in practice. No hidden park fees. No vague inclusions.
Mid-Range Masai Mara Safari
USD 350–600 per person per day. Includes accommodation, all meals, dedicated game drives, and guide. Excellent wildlife access without the ultra-luxury price tag.
Luxury Masai Mara Safari Packages
USD 700–1,000+ per person per day. Private conservancy camps, exclusive off-road drives, night game drives, and exceptional service. Fully inclusive.
Hot Air Balloon Safari Add-On
USD 450–550 per person. Sunrise balloon flight over the plains followed by a champagne bush breakfast. The most-requested premium add-on we offer.
Additional Costs to Factor In
- Masai Mara park fees are seasonally adjusted — they rise significantly between July and December during peak season. This is a real cost we surface upfront, not bury in fine print.
- Private conservancy fees are charged separately and are worth every dollar — they give you off-road driving, night game drives, and fewer vehicles unavailable inside the main reserve.
- Fly-in safari from Nairobi costs more than road transfer but converts 5–6 hours of road to 45 minutes in the air. For shorter stays, this is time extraordinarily well spent.
- Budget-conscious travellers can still enjoy a deeply rewarding safari by choosing shoulder or green season dates, road transfers, and well-selected mid-range camps. The wildlife does not know what season it is.

Everything you need to plan your Masai Mara safari confidently. Click any question to read the answer.
Absolutely. Game viewing in the Masai Mara is exceptional year-round. The resident lion prides, cheetah families, leopards, and elephant herds do not leave when the wildebeest migration departs. January through March is particularly outstanding for predator sightings and offers significantly better value than peak season — fewer vehicles, more intimate encounters, and lower rates across all accommodation tiers.
Mid-range Masai Mara safari packages start from around USD 350 per person per day including accommodation, all meals, game drives, and a dedicated guide. Luxury conservancy camps begin at USD 700 and can exceed USD 1,000 per person per day. Park fees rise considerably from July onward. Beyond the Plains Safaris provides full itemised cost breakdowns — including park fees, conservancy charges, and transfers — so you always know exactly what you are paying for before you commit.
July to October for the Great Migration river crossings — the most dramatic wildlife spectacle in Africa and the reason the Mara has an international waiting list at peak camps. November to February for the best predator sightings, fewer vehicles, lower rates, and extraordinary birding. March to May for lush landscapes, low prices, quiet parks, and storm-lit photography conditions. Every month has genuine advantages — the right time depends on your priorities and budget.
Yes — and it is one of Kenya’s most popular travel combinations. A classic itinerary pairs 3 to 5 days on the Masai Mara with 3 to 5 days at Diani Beach on Kenya’s coast, combining the wildest and most beautiful environments the country offers in a single trip. We handle all connections between the two, including domestic flights or road transfers depending on your itinerary.
Family safaris in the Masai Mara work exceptionally well when planned correctly. We select lodges with spacious family tents or connecting rooms, guides who genuinely engage with younger travellers, and flexible scheduling. Private vehicles are essential for family groups — they allow you to stop, adjust, and pace the drive entirely around your family. Tell us your children’s ages and we will build an itinerary that works for everyone.
Yes. Masai Mara safari packages from India, the UK, the USA, and across the world represent a significant portion of our bookings. We manage all logistics from your first enquiry — visa guidance, international flight coordination, internal Kenyan flights, airport transfers, and full itinerary support through to your final game drive. You handle the flights from home; we handle everything from the moment you land.
By air: a scheduled or charter flight from Wilson Airport takes approximately 45 minutes to the Mara airstrips. This is the preferred option for shorter stays and luxury safari clients. By road: approximately 5 to 6 hours from Nairobi via the A104 highway, crossing the Rift Valley escarpment — a scenic journey many travellers enjoy. We arrange both options and advise based on your itinerary length and budget.
The Plains Are Waiting.
Your Morning Is Ready.
There is a particular quality to the light in the Masai Mara at the end of a game drive. Everything turns golden. A herd of elephants moves slowly toward the horizon. And for a moment, everything you thought was urgent back home becomes very small. That feeling is what we build every safari around.
