Why Tsavo East

Why Choose a Tsavo East Safari?

A Tsavo East safari puts you inside one of Africa's most expansive wilderness areas — covering over 13,700 square kilometres of southeastern Kenya. It is one of the continent's oldest national parks, and it delivers big game encounters with far fewer vehicles than the Masai Mara or Amboseli. Whether you want a quick two-day escape from the coast or a multi-day Kenya safari combining Tsavo East and Tsavo West, the options are wide open.

Tsavo East is home to some of Kenya's most iconic wildlife, including the famous red elephants — large herds that roll in the park's distinctive red laterite soil, coating themselves in the colour the park is known for worldwide.

Wildlife You Can Expect to See

  • Red elephants (Tsavo's icon)
  • Lions & leopards
  • Cheetahs & buffalo
  • Giraffes & zebras
  • Hippos & crocodiles
  • 500+ bird species

Tsavo East is not a Big Five tick-list park. Its sheer size means wildlife is spread across diverse habitats — from riverine woodland to open savannah. The scale and freedom of the landscape is the experience.

Must-See Locations

Top Attractions in Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo East rewards exploration. These are the five landmark sites that every Tsavo East safari should include — each accessible by road from the main gate routes.

Aruba Dam Tsavo East wildlife waterhole Kenya safari 01

Aruba Dam

A year-round waterhole that draws large concentrations of game, especially during the dry season. One of the most reliable wildlife viewing spots in the park — elephants, buffalo, and predators all gather here in the early morning and late afternoon. A productive place to simply park and wait.

Galana River Tsavo East National Park — hippos crocodiles elephant crossing 02

Galana River

The lifeblood of Tsavo East. Game drives along the Galana River offer reliable sightings of hippos, crocodiles, and large elephant herds year-round. The Galana also marks the boundary between Tsavo East and the Dodori-Lungalunga coastal zone, giving it distinct biodiversity along its banks.

Lugard Falls Tsavo East National Park Kenya — volcanic rock rapids Galana River 03

Lugard Falls

A series of dramatic rapids on the Galana River where water forces through narrow channels of ancient volcanic rock. The geological formations are striking, and during high water the falls roar audibly from a distance. Accessible by road and worth combining with a Galana River game drive.

Mudanda Rock Tsavo East — elephant gathering dry season Kenya safari 04

Mudanda Rock

A natural water catchment that acts as a magnet for elephant herds. During the dry season, hundreds of elephants gather here daily — the rock forms a natural stage above the waterhole below. One of the most photogenic and reliable wildlife viewing points in all of Tsavo East.

Yatta Plateau Tsavo East Kenya — world's longest lava flow geological landmark 05

Yatta Plateau

The world's longest lava flow at over 290 kilometres, forming a striking ridge visible across the northern section of the park. The Yatta creates a distinct microhabitat, and game drives along its base consistently produce good sightings of elephant, buffalo, and predators using the woodland along its edge.

Getting There

Tsavo East Safari From Mombasa & Nairobi

Tsavo East is accessible from Kenya's two main cities. We arrange transfers, early morning pickups, and full logistics from both departure points — including the SGR Madaraka Express train option from Nairobi.

From Mombasa

~2.5–3 hrs

Tsavo East is one of the best short safaris from Kenya's coast. The Mtito Andei gate is approximately 230 kilometres from Mombasa — roughly a two-and-a-half to three-hour drive depending on traffic.

Common pickup points:

  • Mombasa city hotels
  • Diani Beach
  • Malindi and Watamu (longer transfers)

A one-day safari from Mombasa is possible but limited. Two to three days give you a far better experience with morning and evening game drives.

Plan from Mombasa

From Nairobi

~4–5 hrs

Nairobi to Tsavo East is approximately a four-to-five-hour road transfer depending on traffic. Three travel options are available:

  • Road transfer — 4WD safari vehicle doubles as your game drive vehicle
  • SGR Madaraka Express — scenic train to Mtito Andei station at the park boundary
  • Charter flight — available to airstrips near the park for shorter journeys

Nairobi departures suit travellers combining Tsavo East with Amboseli or the Masai Mara. Browse combined Kenya safari packages →

Tsavo East Safari — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to plan your Tsavo East safari with confidence. Click any question to expand the answer.

Tsavo East National Park Kenya — elephants and open landscape safari

Yes. Tsavo East offers genuine wilderness, Kenya's iconic red elephants, and excellent value compared with more heavily visited parks like the Masai Mara or Amboseli. It rewards travellers who want space, scale, and a less crowded game drive experience over a guaranteed Big Five tick-list. The lack of vehicle congestion is consistently cited by returning visitors as one of Tsavo East's greatest strengths.

Two days and one night is the practical minimum for a meaningful visit — giving you two game drives and one overnight. Three days allows you to cover more ground and include key sites like Lugard Falls and the Yatta Plateau. From Mombasa, a day trip is possible but gives limited field time. For a Tsavo East and Tsavo West combined safari, four to five days is the recommended minimum.

Yes. The Mtito Andei gate is approximately 230 kilometres from Mombasa — roughly a 2.5 to 3-hour drive. Beyond the Plains Safaris offers flexible Mombasa departures with early morning pickups from Mombasa city hotels, Diani Beach, and other coastal locations. Two nights is the recommended minimum from Mombasa for a rewarding experience with morning and evening game drives.

Elephants (including the famous red elephants — one of Kenya's largest elephant populations), lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, and over 500 bird species. Tsavo East is not a Big Five guarantee on every drive, but its diverse habitats — from riverine woodland to open savannah — mean every game drive delivers different sightings.

Yes — and combining both parks is the most complete Tsavo experience. Most combined itineraries run over four to five days and cover both parks' distinct landscapes: Tsavo East's sweeping red plains, red elephants, and Galana River; and Tsavo West's green hills, Mzima Springs, Shetani Lava, and Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. We design the routing to minimise backtracking between the two. Explore our Tsavo West options →

Yes. Game drives are suitable for children, and several lodges offer family rooms or connecting tents. The lack of crowds makes Tsavo East a relaxed option for families travelling with young children — no need to rush through a game drive before other vehicles arrive. Elephant sightings, especially at Mudanda Rock, are consistently a highlight for younger travellers.

Neutral-coloured lightweight clothing (khaki, olive, beige), a wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera with a telephoto lens. Dust is significant in the dry season — seal electronics in bags or dust covers. Layers are useful for early morning game drives when temperatures can be cooler. Your Beyond the Plains Safaris itinerary includes a full pre-departure packing guide.

Yes, but it is tight. A one-day safari gives you limited time inside the park after accounting for the drive each way. You will typically get one main game drive session around Aruba Dam. Two days and one night is far more rewarding — you get morning and evening game drives, which is when Tsavo East wildlife is most active and the light is most dramatic for photography.
