Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
Drive time approximately 4–5 hours, 240 km. Depart Nairobi after breakfast and head south toward Amboseli. Kids can watch for zebra and giraffe from the pop-up roof as Mount Kilimanjaro comes into view.
Arrive in time for lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive focused on elephant herds and birdlife.
Day 2: Full Day Amboseli National Park
No long drives today; the whole day is dedicated to game viewing inside the park. Amboseli is known for its large, relaxed elephant herds and clear Kilimanjaro views, making it one of the most reliable family safari stops in East Africa.
Morning and afternoon drives are split by a relaxed lunch back at the lodge, giving younger children a midday break.
Day 3: Amboseli to Karatu / Lake Manyara (Namanga Border Crossing)
Drive time approximately 5–6 hours, 280 km, including the border stop. This is the cross-border day. Your guide handles the paperwork at Namanga while you and the kids stretch your legs; the vehicle itself is cleared for both countries, so there's no vehicle swap.
From the border, continue toward Karatu or Lake Manyara, arriving in the afternoon with time to settle in.
Day 4: Karatu / Lake Manyara to Serengeti National Park
Drive time approximately 4–5 hours, 220 km, with a game drive en route through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area's rim. Descend into the Serengeti's central Seronera region, where short grass plains give way to river-line woodland, good territory for lion and leopard sightings.
Arrive at camp in time for a late lunch, followed by an optional short evening drive.
Day 5: Full Day Serengeti National Park
A full day exploring Seronera and surrounding plains, with sightings depending on the season's wildebeest migration patterns and resident big cat populations.
Morning and afternoon drives are timed around a relaxed midday break at camp, useful for families with young children or an afternoon nap routine. This is the itinerary's core Big Five day.
Day 6: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Drive time approximately 3–4 hours, 145 km, back toward the Ngorongoro Highlands. Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater floor for a half-day game drive, a self-contained ecosystem with a dense concentration of wildlife in a compact area, ideal for families short on drive-time patience.
Rhino, hippo pods, and flamingo-lined soda lakes are common sightings here.
Day 7: Ngorongoro to Tarangire National Park
Drive time approximately 3 hours, 180 km. Tarangire is known for its large elephant herds and iconic baobab trees, and it's usually the quietest park on this route.
Afternoon game drive focuses on elephant families around the Tarangire River, plus a chance at giraffe, and, in the dry season, big cats near the riverbed.
Day 8: Tarangire to Arusha / Kilimanjaro International Airport
Drive time approximately 2–3 hours, 120 km. Morning game drive in Tarangire before departing for Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in time for your onward or international flight.

Getting There & Border Logistics
Most families fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi to start this safari. Your driver-guide meets you at arrivals for the transfer to your hotel or straight into Day 1. At the end of the trip, departure is usually via Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), close to Arusha, though a return to Nairobi (NBO) can be arranged if your flights require it.
The Namanga border crossing on Day 3 is the only formal border stop on this route. Kenya and Tanzania are both covered under the East Africa Tourist Visa, which lets you cross Namanga without applying for a second visa, provided you first entered on that visa type. If you're using single-country visas instead, your guide will confirm the Tanzanian visa requirements before travel.
Your Land Cruiser is licensed to operate in both countries, so there's no vehicle change or guide swap at the border, the same vehicle and guide take you from Amboseli through to Tarangire.
