The safari starts early from your Mombasa hotel and travels west along the Mombasa–Nairobi highway towards Tsavo East National Park. The usual entry point from Mombasa is Bachuma Gate, which provides convenient access to the park's southern sector. Kenya Wildlife Service lists Bachuma Gate at approximately 110 km from Mombasa.
Once inside Tsavo East, you spend the main part of the day on a private game drive in a custom 4x4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof.
Tsavo East is Kenya's largest national park, covering approximately 13,747 square kilometres. Day 1: Mombasa – Tsavo East National Park – Mombasa
This is a single-day safari, so the "day by day" below is really your day, step by step, from pre-dawn pickup to evening drop-off. A Tsavo East day safari is a long day — you spend several hours travelling between Mombasa and the park, but the early departure maximises your wildlife-viewing time.
Pickup from Mombasa
Your safari begins before sunrise, normally between 4:30 AM and 5:00 AM, depending on your hotel location. Your private safari vehicle collects you directly from your Mombasa hotel, resort or agreed pickup point.
The early start is important. It allows you to reach Tsavo East while wildlife is becoming active and gives you more time inside the park.
Mombasa to Bachuma Gate
Drive west along the Mombasa–Nairobi highway towards Tsavo East. The drive to the park takes roughly two to three hours depending on your exact pickup location, road conditions and traffic. Bachuma Gate is the most practical entry point for many Mombasa-based day safaris.
After completing the park entry formalities, the safari begins.
Morning Game Drive
Enter Tsavo East with your safari guide and begin exploring the park. The morning is one of the best periods for wildlife activity. Your guide will use recent sightings, tracks, water sources and knowledge of the park to determine where to concentrate the game drive.
Possible sightings include elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, antelopes, ostriches, hippos, crocodiles and numerous bird species. Tsavo's elephants are particularly famous because the park's red laterite soil often gives them a distinctive reddish appearance after dust bathing.
Aruba Dam
Depending on wildlife conditions and the route of the day, the game drive can include the Aruba Dam area. Aruba Dam is one of Tsavo East's important wildlife water sources and can attract elephants, buffalo, birds and other animals, particularly during dry periods.
Rather than following a rigid route, your guide can adjust the drive according to current wildlife activity.
Lunch
Stop for lunch during the safari. Depending on the selected arrangement, lunch can be a picnic-style meal or lunch at a safari lodge or restaurant. After lunch, continue with more game viewing.
Afternoon Game Drive
Continue exploring Tsavo East before beginning the journey towards the park exit. The afternoon can produce excellent elephant and buffalo sightings, while predators may become more active as temperatures begin to fall.
Your guide will determine the best route based on time, wildlife sightings and road conditions.
Return to Mombasa
Exit Tsavo East and begin the drive back to Mombasa. Expect to arrive back at your hotel in the evening, normally around 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, depending on your location and traffic. The safari ends with drop-off at your hotel.

Getting There
The most convenient way to reach Tsavo East is by road. From Mombasa, the safari follows the A109 Mombasa–Nairobi highway towards the park. Bachuma Gate is the main access point commonly used for day safaris from the coast — KWS places it approximately 110 km from Mombasa.
The road journey generally takes around 2–3 hours, depending on your hotel location and traffic. For a one-day safari, we recommend leaving Mombasa around 4:30–5:00 AM to help maximise the time available for game viewing.
From Diani Beach
Guests staying in Diani can also request pickup. Because Diani is south of Mombasa, the total transfer time is longer — we recommend factoring in the extra pickup time when planning a Tsavo East day trip.
From Mombasa Airport
Airport pickup can be arranged for travellers arriving in Mombasa and heading directly to the safari, subject to flight schedules.
By Air
Tsavo East also has several airstrips, including Voi, Aruba, Satao, Sala and Ithumba. However, flying is generally more practical for multi-day safaris than a standard one-day road safari from Mombasa.
